5. Mother

The place we start
Naked depart
For all the world we’re heading for
First journey’s end
Is our first friend
The closing of an open door

Learn at the breast
For once caressed
And never yet felt as secure
A broken cord
Inward outpoured
Still looking for a lifelong cure

Cathedra mother, holy another
Finished only when she is spurned
Via maternal, sacrist eternal
Forgive us all for we have returned

From ’neath her wing
We hear her sing
Drag ourselves out from the rocks
Surround enclose
Her love outgrows
And circles round and gently mocks

Source of our longing, all our belonging
She falls away so we can rise
Natura double, heart of our trouble
Hold us now when the laughter dies
