4. The Pier and the Road

Remember how it was when we would look out
Over the sea with naive eyes
Caught up in ourselves it was a backdrop
As we played out scenes with self absorbing cries

Our emotions still were being tested
As we led ourselves in the heat of day
Before the cool of water in the sunshine
Everyone and all was meant to stay

But the road came and left us standing transfixed
The road came and then we saw the distance
The road came and suddenly it shortened
Those young years we had to leave behind

We would chase ourselves around the cliff tops
The far horizon well within our reach
We were ‘all for one and one for always’
While the water washed up wisely on the beach
