2. The Ship Engulfed

Drifting through the city listening
Feel the hum of human humane
Deadlines and headlines glistening
In the name of mutual gain
And all around is the might of creation
And it’s centred on the night of the soul
In this shimmering white tessellation
The round peg’s bedding down well in its square hole

The congregation gathers together
As they bow as one to the corporate light
Shoulder to shoulder in impersonal pilgrimage
Telling each other they fight the good fight
While barely contained is the out of sight struggle
As the heart pulls away from a pre-destined track
Yearn for your freedom and yearn for fulfilment
As you secretly wonder if they’ll come, come running back

Float in ambition and float in distraction
As we’re driven up high by the heat of the toil
Each inner light unrealised by refraction
For a dream undisturbed never will spoil
Floor upon floor feel the joint perspiration
As they come together in a cause to complain
And everyone says as though it’s their inspiration
‘To work in this place you must be, you must be insane’
