11. Estuary

So we evade the flow of the everyday
The little watch movements that we wish to hide
The sin of the normal come coloured in mid grey
And fast flows the fear of the eventide

Looking for wonders we’re dodgers deceivers
Scanning forever the opposite shore
Leaving the mudflats for unborn believers
Watching them crawl with their uncultured claws

But twice a day I am exposed
Waters subside and my dirt’s disclosed
Let not my loved ones see me as less than they suppose
Leave me alone as the shadows close

A few hardy souls bring their solace right down to me
Lending me clothes that will stand me upright
They shiver for me and they lend me their dignity
I wake up all shaking a-sweat in the night

Up to my ankles in undeserved trifles
Kicking the dirt in these undisguised ways
Searching for metal and rusty old rifles
The days turn to dust and the dread turns to days
