6. Sighs and fears

We meet our fears down at the edge
Where our reason and suspicion blur
Can’t think now but what if it does
The ancient in us pricks up its fur

They’ve put the thing down at the edge
Of course it’s safe but just in case
They will be elegantly far away
Should the impossible take place

Peering through the perforated fencing
Listening for the heart of the beast
Knowing in our hearts that it sleeps
Searching through our patchy education
Hoping that the science tames the beast
Knowing in our hearts that it sleeps

We join our friend down at the edge
But the certain slips through our hands
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
And yet we build upon these sands
