3. Black and white

We said goodbye in black and white
We didn’t have a prayer
We were marching to a future we could share
Taking with us memories
Of long forgotten nights
Whistling in the wind to keep our spirits high

And who could tell the cold?
The fear that cuts the bone
The stench of future gone and passed away
I tried to reach across
To build a bridge so soft
But it dissolved in mud and misery

We had a message from on high
Of God and strength and war
But we had to find salvation for ourselves
A life that’s held in love and prayer
Is ruthlessly cut short
Can they restore a father’s love form victory?

And who could tell the grief?
The madness underneath
Of men who send their men to history
I tried to get above
Got shot down like a dove
And left with honours from a ministry

We said goodbye in black and white
We didn’t have a prayer
