16. Hope young

Well, I was taught to hope young
To look for better things
To hear the hymns of joy sung
With all the love they bring

But in all the faces stood around
There seemed less happiness
Uncertain of the shifting ground
I heard the stories and the glories
Of a time when angels spoke
From the charmless sincere harmless
Frail and fierce god-fearing folk

So I was brushed and brylcreemed
To meet the greater one
As Joseph I would gaze and daydream
To be the greater son

But in all the lessons that I learned
The strongest powerful one
Over all these years has burned
That fear on Sunday’s clear on Monday
Sabbath sin the next day’s gone
But God in boxes outruns foxes
Every day he leads us on
