13. Crying

People offer reassurance
But I do not often trust their tone
Side by side we have insurance
But I think I’m better off alone

If you saw I was crying
I could not hide my shame
If you saw I was crying
You’d know it was more than a game
More than a game

Lovers offer reconnection
But who will have the greater love?
I’m for natural rejection
Which I’ve found to be always be enough

When you get to the scene at the old garden gate
When all has been said and her parents are late
You look in your soul and it’s waving goodbye
The flowers in your hand are beginning to die
You look up above and the silence is grey
And the warmth of her hand is fading away
Caught in a flash of a nondescript eye
You look for life; it’s passing you by
And if you stare very hard you can see that I cry
For the shame I contain is the thing in your eye
Let’s all settle back, watch the nursery tears
For childhood is best for growing up fears
But it’s now hide and seek and it’s more than a game
I heard you count and you’re calling my name
Did you think I was playing – it’s crueller than that
Let’s see the mouse, let’s see the cat

Memories offer recollection
But do they have to be half sad?
I’m not looking for perfection
Are you the best I’ve never had?
