5. Lady Mary

See the statue of Lady Mary
And her beseeching look
Mighty lady ever virgin
So I’ve read in your book

Mary was a peasant girl in Jewish obscurity
Chosen by God for his own son’s security
Knows what it is to give birth to purity
Mary, mother of the Lord

She was there throughout his childhood
Though she often misunderstood
She only did what a mother should
Mary, mother of the Lord

Mary, oh Mary, oh what have they done
You gave the glory to your blessed son
Oh Mary, oh Mary

See the people round her feet
And the crowd that she draws
But her eyes are where they’ve always been
On the son she adores

His time at home was all too brief
Soon came the time when he was to leave
She had to give so the world could receive
Mary, mother of the Lord

She was there when he died
Saw the blood run from his side
So full of grief that she never cried
Mary, mother of the Lord

When they took his body away
She would not go she wanted to stay
They never forgot her face that day
Mary, mother of the Lord

Mary, oh Mary, oh what have they done
You gave the glory to your blessed son
His was the death that the victory won
Oh Mary, oh Mary

Behind those silent lips what tales she could tell
Of the one she gave breath
His friends, his thoughts, his way of life
And his way of death

But I think that she’d only say
Without a moment’s thought
‘I am now what I’ve always been –
The handmaid of the Lord’

Hail Mary, hail Mary
