2. My secret garden

In my secret garden walk with me
Past the perfumed flowers ’neath the cedar tree
And feel the richness of a personality
And it’s me

Don’t dwell too long on the diggings half begun
Nor at the patches where the nettles overrun
They die and wither when exposed to the sun
Then I’m me

When the sun comes up the greyness disappears
There are roses of laughter wet with the dew of tears
And all the feelings that have coloured my years
You can see

And there are people with gardens overgrown
They try to steal mine try to call it their own
But they find that everything is turned to stone
Leave me be

‘Why is it secret?’ I can hear you say
You could open to the public twice a day
All I know is that it’s not my way
To be free, to be me

But I’m not convinced about my own sufficiency
I need the sunshine of your patient sympathy
And together we can live a life that’s free
You and me
